En el principio era el sonido, era el ritmo; la sustancia sonora es la materia prima del mundo: éste es el fundamento de El origen musical de los animales-símbolos del profesor Marius Schneider. Etnología, musicología y simbología se conjugan en esta obra que fue definida por Elémire Zolla como la única completamente iniciática del sigloXX. Escrita en lengua castellana durante la estancia del profesor Schneider en Barcelona, fue publicada en 1946. Las culturas primitivas, con las que Schneider estuvo en contacto directo en África, y las denominadas altas culturas constituyen el ámbito que permite la reconstrucción de todo un sistema de correspondencias místicas entre los sonidos, los astros, los instrumentos musicales o los cuatro elementos. El autor parte de la cosmografía musical megalítica, conservada en la Europa medieval o en los textos védicos de la India, para descifrar las claves musicales inscritas en los capiteles de los claustros del monasterio de San Cugat y de la catedral de Gerona. Pero El origen musical de los animales-símbolos es, además, una auténtica iniciación en la simbología pues introduce al lector en las nociones básicas de correspondencia, analogía y ritmo común.
